Hi Jeremy,
I’ve been using the Lactate Plus that I purchased from lactate.com (https://lactate-testing.myshopify.com/collections/all/products/lactate-plus-lactate-analyzer). The website it’s a bit old school but the support is excellent. As for the meter, it works perfectly. Please let me know if you have more specific questions.

radu.diaconuParticipantHi,
I tore my ACL, MCL, and meniscus in February last year and had surgery at the end of March. Since I had all 3 fixed at the same time I was not weight-bearing for 6 weeks. During the 6 weeks, I’ve used a machine that was moving my leg to certain angles. That helped a lot with regaining full range in the knee. As soon as I was able to walk I started riding the indoor trainer (very low resistance and focus on increasing cadence, also monitored the power ratio operator leg vs non-operated one) and walking as much as possible. This was later followed by very easy incline treadmill walking and outside hiking.
Once I was able to run, around 3-4 months after surgery I started running on the treadmill using a Lever system, which helps you take some of your weight off. Also, followed the running protocol my doctor suggested. Start very easy and do more as long as there is no pain.
Key advice would be:
– move as much as you can and keep it low intensity, you don’t need to be that sport-specific until you regain your quad strength and a full range of motion.
– strength train and follow your doctor/PT protocol. You might want to talk with a strength coach if you have the means. Also, one app that I found useful is Strength Training.
Hope this helps and you get back to doing what you enjoy as soon as possible. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I’m definitely not an expert and I would like to see the input from some of the coaches on this. I’m wondering if this is just a “specificity” re-adaptation that takes a bit of time. What I mean by that is, maybe by now your body got so used to running that it might take a bit more that 8 days of skiing to “fully” use that aerobic engine you built running to the new demand.
Are you still keeping a high volume of running outside of the skiing workouts?
Hope I didn’t make it more confusing 🙂

radu.diaconuParticipantBrian,
I think this is similar to something that I’ve read a few years back about the Tour de France bikes. The person that was reviewing one of the winners bike said: “this bike is like a Ferrari, in the hands of a good driver its a very fast car, in the hands of the average Joe it’s just a car”. I’m sure carbon shoes will bring some improvements to anyone, but mostly the elites would see/feel those benefits better. I’m sure the 4% that Nike advertises on their shoes is for a sub 5min/mi pace not 10min/mi :).
Personally I think that smart and consistent training will bring a bigger return on investment than a pair of fancy shoes. You might not be as cool thought 🙂

radu.diaconuParticipantScott,
Looks like lactate.com has Science of Winning (https://lactate-testing.myshopify.com/collections/all/products/the-science-of-winning) and also Amazon in electronic format.
As for Canova’s marathon book, I’ve got mine from iaaf.org, looks like now they are worldathletics.org. This was a couple of years back so I don’t know if they still have it. I will leave the name and email of the person I talked to in case someone is interested.Thierry Capanni (thierry.capanni@worldathletics.org)

radu.diaconuParticipantHi Tomas,
Here are some books that were recommended to me and I found them very useful:
– Supertraining by Yuri Verkhoshansky and Mel Siff – very dense
– Periodization, Theory and Methodology of Training by Tudor Bompa and Carlo Buzzichelli – also very dense
– Special Strength Training Manual for Coaches by Yuri Verkhoshansky and Natalia Verkhoshansky
– The Block Training System by Yuri Verkhoshansky – summarizes the Special Strength Training
– Science of Winning by Jan Olbrecht – great information regarding lactate testing
– Science of Running by Steve Magness – he also has a newer book (Do Hard Things) not running related but maybe useful more on the mental side
– A Scientific Approach to the Marathon by Renato Canova – hard to find but very good information on Canova’s training approach plus quick read
– Modern Training and Physiology by John DavisHope this helps.
Cheers,
