I ruptured my patellar tendon and had my surgery a month ago. It was pretty messy they told me, although I don’t know the details of the state that it was in. 4 weeks in I’m still immobilized with the brace set at full extension.  PT isn’t on the table until 6 weeks postop.

My question – has anyone experienced this injury, and if you returned to mountaineering how long did it take to get there?

For background, I climb mostly in the PNW, like Mount Hood, Mount Adam, Baker, etc. Standard routes.

    Thanks!

Sorry to hear this. They are always a bit messy. I ruptured mine in 2006, and I was back to running/climbing etc by 6-9 months. I was stationary biking at about 6 weeks, riding outdoors by 3 months. Enlist the help of an experienced sports physio and this will make things smoother. In general return to full sports is the norm.

Andy – thanks for the assurance! My goal is to  get back to where I was preinjury. I was setting up for an excellent season in 2024.

I’m hoping to find some modality that will help build or retain some of the endurance I already have although I can’t think of anything other than rowing or the arm bicycle thing. Any suggestions? Should I just resign to starting over when I can finally start jogging/hiking?
