    Hello.

Does anyone have/use any of the Garmin watches with the Lactate Threshold feature?  I’m wondering how it compares to the Heart Rate Drift Test for testing and retesting your lactate threshold.  Or even how it compares to a gas exchange test/using a blood lactate test.

    thanks

    Jeremy:

The Garmin Lactate Threshold estimation will not give the same result as our HR Drift test.  The HR drift test is used to determine the aerobic threshold. The Lactate Threshold, as Garmin uses it, is equivalent to our Anaerobic Threshold.   If you really want to know your AnT/LT you should conduct our AnT. It’s going to be more accurate.  This article will give you more information about these tests https://evokeendurance.com/our-latest-thinking-on-aerobic-assessment-for-the-mountain-athlete/.

    I hope this helps.

I’m reasonably skeptipcal of Garmin’s capabilities but I have to say, in my case, it seemed to match up well versus my average HR running uphill for 30 minutes. Apparently it uses HRV to detirmine respitory rate.

Can you image if they can get it to work for an accurate AeT? The hours Scott would save not having to point everyone towards the drift test article!

There was a peer-reviewed study this year comparing Garmin’s lactate threshold test to an actually measured lactate test for the LT. HR was within 2 percent, although the watch underestimated LT pace.  So I think it’s pretty reasonable for the anaerobic threshold to set your heart rate
