I’m planning out my training for spring ski mountaineering objectives in the Pacific Northwest and have a question about counting elevation gain for workouts on an incline treadmill. I’ve seen online calculators for elevation gain for incline treadmill workouts and am wondering how or if to count that elevation gain towards my weekly elevation gain goals. My work week workouts are all on an incline treadmill set to 9 degrees (~15% grade). I try to get outside for hiking / skinning on the weekend for actual elevation gain. Looking at the sample Hut to Hut Ski Mountaineering plan in TFUA, I’m already way over the elevation gain goals laid out in the last weeks of the programme since I typically hike ~2.5 miles per workout on the incline treadmill which equates to ~2100 ft gained per workout (~6300 ft per week not including the outdoor workout which typically adds another 1700 – 2500 ft).

Should I be counting the total elevation gain on the incline treadmill towards my weekly goal or only a portion of it?

    Thanks!
