I recently read Scott’s article on using and adjusting Training Peaks metrics for mountain athletes (here) and was wondering if I should be adding TSS to my incline treadmill workouts for the estimated vertical covered in those workouts. Workouts are on a 15% incline and typically covering 2.5 – 3.5 miles which works out to 1980 – 2770 feet gained per workout (which would add 19 – 27 TSS to each workout). Thoughts from the coaches and community?

    Thanks!

    Hi Risto,

    Thanks for writing in.

I typically take 50% of the machine vertical gain and apply that number to the same formula you mention (10TSS / 1000ft gained). I find the machine vert affect about 50% of that as the outdoor vert. Other coaches might have different opinions and there is probably not a perfect answer for this!
