Aerobic Threshold in long duration activities

    Hi everyone

    After reading Training for the new Alpinism, I found out (oh wonder ;-)) that I am aerobically deficient after evaluating my AeT (138) and AnT (173).

    I don’t really train much for endurance systematically, but am often out ski touring or trail running for longer durations (4 – 8 hours).

    Knowing now that I should mostly stay below my AeT during all activities to improve my endurance and fix my ADS, I was wondering if for those long activities I have to stay below my evaluated AeT of 138 for the let’s say full 4 hours, or if for each hour I can increase the threshold marker by 5% because of the heart rate drift and still be aerobic.

    The way I understand the HR Drift Test that should actually be true but I’m just not quite sure. It would mean that after 4 hours my HR could be 167 and I would still be at my threshold.

    Ralf:

    If the goal is to improve your aerobic capacity/elevate your AeT then you need to train below your AeT.  The drift test tells you whether the STARTING heart rate was at or below your AeT.  Your AeT does not drift up during a long ski tour.

    Thanks a lot for your feedback. So the AeT does not drift, thats what I needed to know.

     

    For longer activities out in the terrain, I find it difficult to have your HR at the AeT, but not surpass it. Can a session like the one below be regarded as an okay training session or is it too much dipping into zone 3?

    Yes, that kind of session is going to be very typical for most people’s Z2 work and it will get the job done.
