Training for Hunters

Training for backcountry hunting bears a striking similarity to training for the military athlete. For the past decade coaches at Evoke Endurance have been preparing hundreds of military athletes for the toughest Special Operations Force selections, including Ranger School, Special Forces, SEAL, and Tier 1 units like CAG and DEVGRU.
The special methods we have developed to get the candidates prepared to carry heavy loads over very rough, trackless terrain while navigating by map and compass for weeks on end turn out to be ideally suited to the needs of the backcountry hunter.
The principle requirement for these, often multi day hunts are primarily aerobic capacity coupled with adequate strength and muscular endurance. Aerobic capacity is best developed with a high volume of endurance training conducted at low to moderate intensity. We use a special test to help determine the upper limit of this intensity. The high intensity approach to training that is often touted as the holy grail of endurance training is the exact opposite of what a backcountry hunter needs.
