Guides have specific challenges with their schedules and the physical demands of their job that makes the use of any stock training plan almost impossible. While it is the ideal way for guides to train we recognize that not all guides can afford our outstanding one-on-one Coaching service.
Because of that we offer a customized/individualized plan to athletes in the guiding community. This plan is 6-weeks in duration and is a proven effective way to provide guides with a plan that fits their needs
These individualized plans are based on the same proven training principles developed by Scott Johnston, co-founder of Uphill Athlete and Evoke Endurance. They’re built by the same coaches who made Uphill Athlete famous and who now work at Evoke. We carefully craft these plans to best achieve your goals, optimizing your time and equipment/terrain availability.
We recommend that those pursuing the custom plan option have, at a minimum, some foundational knowledge of basic training principles outlined in Training for the New Alpinism or Training for the Uphill Athlete .
Depending on your goals, training history, and several other factors, six weeks may or may not be enough time to make significant improvements in your fitness. You and the coach who writes your plan can determine this during your initial interview.
Our aim is to strike a balance of time-efficient training while adhering to the limitations of adaptation and subsequent fitness. This plan is ideally suited to those with a several-month time frame who will be coming back for updates and adjustments every six weeks.
Getting Started:
The first step to your Guide 6-Week Custom Plan starts with this form. Then, after reviewing your form, we select one of our coaches to get in touch with you and set up a 30-minute intake call. During the call, you and the coach will go into more details about your training background, time constraints, equipment and terrain access, and more. Once more information is gathered, the coach will begin working on your plan.
After the call you will receive a link to pay for your plan. Once paid, your plan will appear in your TrainingPeaks account. (Note: While you do need a TrainingPeaks account, you don’t need the Premium version of TrainingPeaks for Custom Plan functionality.) During the first week, you get two email exchanges with the coach who built your plan to request changes or explanations of the plan.
What this plan does not offer is routine check-ins or comments by your coach. The 6-Week Custom Plan is not a program where our coaches provide daily feedback and constant alterations to the program. Here is a comparison of our plans and coaching options.

- In most cases, a heart rate monitor chest strap will be necessary to determine your heart rate zones. We use a simple and accurate testing procedure to determine the Aerobic and Anaerobic HR thresholds. More information. These thresholds are used to control things like running speed and give you a sense of your particular level of aerobic fitness. We might have you perform an Anaerobic Threshold test as well. Our coaches will explain more.
- While a GPS enable and heart rate recording watch isn’t required to train using a custom plan, it’s a useful tool for monitoring your HR, tracking spatial data, and timing intervals. All major brands are fine watches, and, for the price-conscious, refurbished units can serve just as well. Regardless of brand, synching your device to TrainingPeaks is a relatively easy one-time process. Here is how.
- The premium version of TrainingPeaks is not required to receive or utilize your custom plan.
- Additional phone calls with a coach beyond the initial set-up call included in the 6-week Custom Plan can be arraigned on a per-hour charge. We offer a discounted rate of $40 for every 30 minutes of the call. Thirty minutes minimum. Thereafter, calls are billed in 15-minute/$20 increments. More information here.
