It seems to me you have been trying to test your AnT using something that resembles a ME workout. To ever get close to your AnT on a course that incredibly steep you would need to do some very specific training or at least use poles efficiently.

Remember that all heartrate based thresholds are sport and terrain specific. It will be different on flat terrain compared to steep terrain, as they are completely different movement patterns. Just as it will be different on a bike or XC skis.

So you need to find the theshold heartrate zones for the training environment(s) that are relevant to your goals. If that´s the VK of Fully than you know what you need to work on 😉

    Thank you!

Yes, definitely notice a different leg fatigue after skate skiing than running.

It´s funny how I seem to naturally gravitate towards the AeT point in both running and skiing. It just makes sense to put in an effort that doesn´t jack up the breathing while still keeping a fun pace. Since my running AeT pace is creeping up to around the 90% of AnT pace I find pushing into higher zone 3 quite challenging for more than a few minutes. I´m hoping the gym ME workouts that I´m doing throughout the winter will be the right choice to improve my zone 3 endurance.

Thank you for adding this perspective. I wasn´t aware of more skiers that are able to compete in mountain running on a high level. I guess the lower impact/higher intensity of XC skiing allows of more accumulation of hard aerobic training, where the pounding running can start to limit the runner. The resultant fitness can than make for some excellent running, even if the athlete isn´t optimally adapted neuromuscularly to running.

Definitely following this one. I would bet on the 90 minute sessions being most effective.

Unfortunately, on weekdays for most of the year I can only squeeze in a early morning 30-45 minute session. So I hope there is still some benefit to racking up volume this way.
