I live and train at sea level (~230′ / 70m) and slowly chipping away at my ADS. AeT is at ~130 and nasal breathing matches that HR on flats and hills.
I was out running at higher elevation (5000-6000′ / 1500-2000m) and my HR was immediately higher. I was averaging ~150 BPM while on a modest jog and nasal breathing. I perceived the effort as “easy” – like my training runs at sea level. When slowed to a walking pace my HR was 135.
Undoubtedly elevation increases cardiovascular demands and therefore HR, but in my case where I am unable to stay below my AeT even at a walking pace what are your recommendations?
How do you reconcile the difference b/w perceived effort, nasal breathing, and HR at elevation for a lowly sea level dweller?
