My lab test Aet is approximately 111-113bpm. 111bpm is where carbs and fat cross, while 113 is where I hit 2mmol lactate. I am now trying to build lots of volume walking, and will slowly increase allowable hr (no more than 1bpm/month) before I test again in a few months

However, I can nose breathe and easily converse around at 140-145bpm, which is where carb usage is 75% and my lactate is 3-3.5mmol.
Any theories on why there is a mismatch? Maybe perhaps to my training background always being “go as hard as you can” in the past?

Also, before I lab tested, I was accumulating a lot of volume at 135-150 bpm, but felt like I was spinning my wheels and was improving.    Lab test made that make a lot more sense.

Above comment I meant to say was not* improving

Great question for which I have no answer. I have asked several exercise scientists why in some aerobically deficient people, ventilation does not correlate with AeT.  So far, none of them knew why. I’m curious about this too and when/if I find out I will let it be known.

Thanks Scott! Also, in my original post, I meant to say I’ll be increasing allowable hr by 1 beat per week*…. Not month lol. That would take quite a while

Also Scott… I made a post in the Aerobic Assessment section with my lab result pics…. It said it needed approval before being posted… that was about a month ago I believe. Anything you can do so it will show up?

Scott, I have a theory on why there is the mismatch. I read that alcohol can prevent fat oxidation… and I was drinking too much when I took that test. I wonder if that can explain it?

    Bumping… I hope that’s not frowned upon

“I was drinking too much when I took that test”

You can disregard any kind of measurement or labs that happened up to 72hours after drinking (i am assuming it was more than one beer or one glass of wine). Assuming its not regular activity for you.

If you consumed alcohol, you poisoned your body. I am not being moralistic (i partied a lot myself), i am describing what it objectively is.

Nothing works “correctly” after that. Your nervous system is impacted, your metabollic system is impacted, etc.

And yes alcohol consumation has effect on fact oxidation and on insulin resistance and on cortisol levels, etc .. which will all change how your body reacts to endurance activity.

Dont drink for a week, then take the tests again.

Thanks Adam, I managed to fix it. Quit drinking alcohol (2 months sober now) and have walked about 90% of days the last year. Got a lactate meter, and my lactate at 144bpm is now 1.8mmol/L!!! Now do jogging 4-7/week trying to stay under 135bpm (I feel more comfortable being conservative for now)

What lab performs AeT testing?  About how much did it cost you to do?
