I just completed the AeT drift test protocol on the treadmill and ended up lowballing my starting HR. I started at 148 and only went up 1.5-2 bpm (depending on exactly where you draw the window given noise), representing just over a 1% drift. It’s great confirmation to see that I’m well below my AeT at that HR, but given the low drift, are there any recommended rules of thumb for how much to bump up the starting HR next time? From previous training, my guess was that I’d be somewhere in the 148-155 range, so should I now go to the high end of the range – if I’m clearly drifting then I’ve at least bounded the HR between the two tests?

    Much appreciated!

    Hi,

Thanks for writing in. Try 155bpm for the next test. Same incline as before. If I see 1% it’s likely someone is about 5-7beats below AeT if the cadence stays the same at the higher HR.

    Happy training!
