    Hey there,

Currently on week 4 of the 24 Week Mountaineering plan. A bit of background: I am 36, living in a geographically challenged (flat) area, I am hilariously unathletic and while I’ve always been active and ‘exercised’, it’s always  been high intensity (mountain biking, hockey, when I did run, it was full blast). As a result, I have severe ADS and run at an embarrassingly slow pace with my HR skyrocketing at the slightest uphill. No problem, I’m trusting the process.  Zone 2 workouts are done on a mixture of a gym stair climber for vert, a paved path for flats / runs and the one mildly hilly park near me for Z2 long hike / runs (I can get an accumulated 1000′ of vert over 2.5 hours!)

I’m currently training for a 5 day alpine climbing trip into the Bugaboos in late July. As it stands, the 24 Week ME Plan is scheduled to finish in mid-June. I was curious as to if you had any advice how to extend this for an additional month? Based on my lack of training history and ADS, I would no doubt benefit from an additional month of base training.  Was just curious as to if you had any insight.

Thanks so much, loving your content.

    Hi Bryan,

Thanks for writing in. Another Month of base training is what I’d suggest too. You can continue to increase the volume as the plan has increased volume (approx 10% per week), as well as integrate a rest week. Or, you can look back at your actual hours in zones, see the increase per week (assuming it has..) and, if there was no issue with these increases per week, apply the same proportionate increases to the next 4weeks.  Listen to your body though as increasing volume is dependent on tolerance and not just fallowing formula. Perhaps another AeT test before you start this additional Base month will ensure you’re on track.

Hope this helps and enjoy the Bugs!

    -Seth
