    Hi everyone,

    I’ve been running ultras for 6 years, relying on TftUA, and I train over 400 hours a year. My training has been very consistent with steady improvements in performance. To my surprise, last season was a breakout year for me with 4 podiums in 4 ultras, including my first 100 miler in Sept. Unfortunately, I think I flew a little too close to the sun, either due to too much racing or perhaps too much training (or both!), and I have been injured and unable to run for the past 4 months but desperate to retain my progress.

    Can you give me advice on retaining fitness while injured? I have been putting in a lot of hours cycling, between 10-13 hours per week, in an effort to continue to build my aerobic base. This includes MTB and cycling on the trainer. Is MTB preferred, since technical downhills lead to eccentric muscle contractions? Is it worth it to incorporate weekly Z3 workouts, perhaps even a double threshold day? Should I add ME workouts to prepare for my return to running? I would appreciate any advice you might have. Thanks in advance!

    maolillia;

    So sorry to hear about your prolonged struggle with injury.  My answer might be too late for you this time but consider it for the future.  Here is what we typically do with injured runners:  cycling, elliptical, treadmill hiking at an incline,  using a device like the Lever .

    I hope this helps and sorry to be so slow in replying.

    Scott
