Hi, I own both training for the new alpinism and uphill athlete as I’m absolutely fascinated by the topics covered throughout both books. I find both books massively useful and frequently use both when planning training for myself and others. I’m just wondering if you could recommend any other books that cover similar topics (doesn’t have to be mountain sports, I’m just really eager to learn more about periodisation and different training methods across all endurance sports, although I do have a preference towards running and multiple ski disciplines). I saw that Scott recommended “The Science of Winning” in his capacity/utilisation training article, which I’m now heavily browsing different websites to try and buy, so I’m curious if you could recommend any other books that you’ve found useful throughout your coaching and athletic careers? Thanks so much!

    Hi Tomas,

Here are some books that were recommended to me and I found them very useful:
    – Supertraining by Yuri Verkhoshansky and Mel Siff – very dense
    – Periodization, Theory and Methodology of Training by Tudor Bompa and Carlo Buzzichelli – also very dense
    – Special Strength Training Manual for Coaches by Yuri Verkhoshansky and Natalia Verkhoshansky
    – The Block Training System by Yuri Verkhoshansky – summarizes the Special Strength Training
    – Science of Winning by Jan Olbrecht – great information regarding lactate testing
    – Science of Running by Steve Magness – he also has a newer book (Do Hard Things) not running related but maybe useful more on the mental side
    – A Scientific Approach to the Marathon by Renato Canova – hard to find but very good information on Canova’s training approach plus quick read
    – Modern Training and Physiology by John Davis

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Radu

    Radu:
Thanks for those recommendations. I concur with all of them. A few additional comments. Science of Winning is hard to find. I got min from a swim shop in the UK. Steve Magness’s Science of Running was self-published and is full of typos. He badly needed an editor so be prepared for that. But the info is solid. If you are well-versed in Canova you can see that it is mostly cribbed from Canova. He does a good job but sadly does not give credit to Canova for the inspiration that obviously heavily influenced his thinking. John Davis similarly has done the Reader’s Digest version of Canova. He actually got Canova’s blessing to do it. It does a great job of summarizing Canova, who can get rather rambly, although his rambling always has nuggets i=of great interest. I prefer to go straight to the source with Canova but his writing is mostly scattered through the Let’s Rum Forum. If you can find Canaova’s marathon book let me know where you got it. It is long out of print and I have searched with no luck. Good luck with your studies. Scott

    Scott,

Looks like lactate.com has Science of Winning (https://lactate-testing.myshopify.com/collections/all/products/the-science-of-winning) and also Amazon in electronic format.
As for Canova’s marathon book, I’ve got mine from iaaf.org, looks like now they are worldathletics.org. This was a couple of years back so I don’t know if they still have it. I will leave the name and email of the person I talked to in case someone is interested.

Hi both, I’ve bought ‘Periodisation’ by Bompa as well as ‘Training and Physiology’ by Davis, both of which I’m a huge fan of. I also printed Davis’ summary of Canova, which I’m also working my way through. Perfect recommendations and exactly the type of writing I was looking for, so thank you!

Scott, to add onto Radu’s point, ‘Science of Winning’ is available on lactate. It’s also available on ‘F&G Partners’ (partnersinsports.be), a Dutch website, which I had to order from as I’m based in the UK. In order to buy the book you have to send a bank transfer (instead of simply purchasing online), which seems unsafe and a bit odd, but they’re not scammers and they’re totally safe (just in case anyone else is sceptical around the validity of this website)!
