Leif is a dedicated student in the art of training and a lover of mountains. As a coach, his motivation stems from a desire to share his knowledge and experience of training for mountain sports with other athletes who would benefit by adding structure and logic to their training or are unsure how best to approach a challenging goal.
Growing up in Calgary, Alberta, Leif grew up skiing, hiking and mountain biking in the Canadian Rockies, where he began to develop his passion for mountains at a young age. Over time, he has expanded his repertoire of mountain pursuits including ultra running, ice and mixed climbing, rock climbing. The training methodologies Scott Johnston illuminated became an integral part of Leif’s life when he was faced with preparing himself for a trip to Alaska in tandem with tackling his first year of engineering school. Needless to say, after this early experience he was a complete convert. Years later, he continues to use this approach to training as the foundation to his mountain pursuits and keenly enjoys delving into new research pertaining to training methodologies. He holds a BASc in Mechanical Engineering with a focus in Biomedical applications.
Leif holds numerous FKT’s in the Canadian Rockies, including the Rundle Traverse, supported Canmore Quad, and Coire Dubh Integrale. He has podiumed at ultra races, most recently with a first-place finish at the Golden Ultra in British Columbia. In the alpine environment his experience ranges from Denali to the north face of Mount Temple in the Canadian Rockies. He is an active rock, ice and mixed climber and enjoys Moonboarding.
