Meet Andy Reed

Andy is a Sports Medicine Physician based in Canmore, Alberta, Canada, with a lifelong passion for mountain sports. Since his teens, he has been heavily involved in mountain activities such as fell running in the UK, rock and ice climbing, mountaineering in the European Alps, Canadian Rockies and greater ranges, mountain biking, Nordic and backcountry skiing, adventure racing, and, over the last 2 decades, mountain ultra trail running.

As a competitive ultrarunner, Andy has achieved multiple podium finishes in North American ultra-distance events ranging from 50 km to 100 miles. He’s finished twelve one hundred mile trail races, with notable finishes at the Leadville Trail 100, Western States 100, Hardrock 100, Bighorn, Run Rabbit Run, Fat Dog 120 and more.

He holds the course record for the Iron Legs 100 km and the Fastest Known Time (FKT) for the Canmore Double Quad (107 km, 10,000+ m elevation gain). Notable recent results include second-place finishes at the IMTUF 100 and the Orcas Island 100.

In his professional capacity, Andy serves as the lead team physician for the Canadian National Biathlon and ParaNordic ski teams. He specializes in the diagnosis and management of the full spectrum of sporting injuries and performance-related medical issues, helping athletes of all abilities stay healthy and achieve their goals.
Andy coaches athletes of all levels, in multiple disciplines, from professional trail runners, to weekend warriors. His coaching philosophy stems from his professional capacity as a physician, stating that all performance must be built on a solid foundation of good health.

“As a physician, I base my coaching ideology on my expert knowledge of the human body, on physiology and evidence-based training practices. Working with high performance teams and multiple olympians has shown me what is possible at the highest level, but the principles I use are effective at all levels! Most of us are only scratching the surface of our potential. Consistent and sensible workloads, and training practices backed by sound science are an essential component of my coaching armamentarium.”

Kind words from Andy's athletes

I am blown away by the evolution of coaching. This is my second time hiring a coach, and first time with Andy Reed and Evoke who shattered my concept of a training plan. You don’t need to be a super athlete to use a coach, as I am surely not! I do, however, have dreams bigger than I think my natural abilities allow me to achieve. I am a husband and a father first. A full-time, self-employed individual second, and in a distant third, a somewhat decent athlete who thinks he still has a little left in him to do something epic. (Does this sound like you too?) I do not have many ultra buckles, and #FatDog120 is, by far, the hardest I’ve done. The more I want to do these crazy races, the more I realize I know less than I think I do. There is so much more to learn than the extra bit of experience learned from each event. The only way to achieve a goal this audacious is to be coached by a pro. To pull off a feat of running 120 miles through the Canadian wilderness wasn’t going to be accomplished by using my old bag of tricks—i.e. go out and do a lot of big, long runs. To succeed, I knew I needed to tap into the collective wisdom, knowledge, and data Evoke has learned over the years with hundreds of athletes and many professional coaches’ experiences. Andy got to know my strengths and limitations to training. He tailored and adjusted my plan over time to target my weaknesses and strengthen me for the race. It’s one thing to train for a race with 8,000m of elevation if you live in the Rockies, but it takes a professional perspective to adapt a training plan when your client is based in Chicago. I am beyond impressed to say that I finished the race, and know the real kudos goes to Andy and Evoke for getting me to the start and finish line. The icing on the cake has been a faster recovery from this race than my previous ultras. This informational tidbit blows my mind! If you are dreaming big for your next epic adventure, use the resources and coaching partners at Evoke to make your dream a reality. And if you haven’t tapped into their podcast, please find it—there’s tons of incredible (and free!) information there. Thank you Andy, and thank you Evoke!
