    Hi, I’ve done the usual AeT test and feel comfortable mine is at least in the low 150s.  However and maybe this is useful for others, but below was a recent long run I did on trail, 1hr splits (out and back) that had equal heart rate (158 HR) and no drift in pace (4:3o/km GAP) for each 1hr.

    I usually equate this to my Z3 above AeT, but does this result without drift possibly mean my AeT is closer to 158, especially considering I was able to maintain for 2+ hrs?

    The one part that makes me a bit nervous believing this is AeT, I’d argue this pace was a little beyond conversational pace with breathing, although did feel sustainable for at least another hour+.

    especially since you did this out doors for such a long run where heat and dehydration would normally increase drift your AeT is no doubt higher than 158.

    That’s crazy, thanks for the response and perspective Scott, I have to figure this one out because it’s nuts when you think about MAF method of 180 minus age +5 would put me at 138-143 HR for top of zone 2!

    While I have great respect for Phil Mafetone (the originator of the MAF formula) it is after all just a formula that does not consider anyone’s personal response to exercise.  That is why we recommend something like our simple drift test.  However, your field test is a good alternative.  The question to ask yourself is: “how wrecked were you from this run?”  This run was very long but on shorter runs you can use this rule of thumb:  If you are training within your aerobic capacity and the run was not overly musically demanding, could you do it again today and then again for day’s afterward without struggling?  Can you recovery within 24 hours?  Then you are training below AeT.
