Is 160bpm high for AeT?

I’ve now run through my AeT test three times over the course of a couple years, each time at the start of a workout plan. Each time I have calculated my AeT at right 158-161. This corresponds well to nose breathing and I can feel a notable difference when I pass that point. But in talking with a couple friends who have medical background, they suggested that 160 seemed quite high.
I trust the tests and how I feel, but is 160 abnormally high for an AeT? I will say that it hasn’t really increased much since the first time I did the test, and my running pace hasn’t gotten much faster, but I attribute that to my age (42) and having never really worked out before I started this. My max heart rate seems tested at 183, although I’m not super confident in that result because it was quite hot the day I tested and I was blowing up. Unsure if I’d get a different number if I tried again.
November 27, 2023 at 9:14 am #131955brianlcoxParticipantMy AeT is in the low 160s and my LT is in the low 170s. I think that’s not so unusual for someone with a fairly well developed aerobic system.
I have no idea what my max is, as I’ve never tried. I’ve seen it near 180, but could probably go a bit higher if I had a good reason…
November 29, 2023 at 5:08 pm #132090Scott JohnstonKeymaster160 is quite a reasonable AeT. We have had very well-trained young athletes with AeT heart rates up into the high 180s. These kids had max HRs of well over 200, though.
The drift test usually correlates very closely with a gas exchange test. If you have done this test several times and keep getting the same result, I think you can be confident that your AeT is around 160.

I wouldn’t consider myself very fit as I’m still often one of the slowest in my group and the most exhausted at the end of the trip, but I am seeing slow improvements. I’ll keep on keeping on. Started the 24 week plan this week, so I’m looking forward to seeing more improvements this winter!
